MAAA Resources:

Requirements for an Aerial Applicator
Aerial applicators, better known as crop dusters, must follow strict guidelines and requirements in order to remain compliant with government regulations. These guidelines and requirements are in place to ensure that all aerial applicators perform in a safe, environmentally friendly, professional manner.

Pilots

Must have a Commercial Pilots license.
Have a Letter of Competence from the FAA.
Must be licensed by the State Department of Agriculture.
Must be certified by the Mississippi Department of Agriculture/Bureau of Plant Industry and must re-certify every year.
Aircraft must be inspected and licensed by the FAA and the Mississippi Agricultural Aviation Board.

Operators

Must hold a Part 137 (agricultural operating) Certificate from the FAA.
Must have a Chief Pilot on file with the FAA and Mississippi Department of Agriculture/Bureau of Plant Industry.
The FAA requires that the Chief Pilot take a written exam and flight test in order to receive the "Skills and Knowledge" endorsement to be a chief pilot.
The Mississippi Agricultural Aviation Board requires that the Chief pilot must have a minimum of 2 years experience and a minimum of 500 hours of agricultural flying experience.
Must meet all mandatory state and federal pollution regulations such as the FIFRA Act and Clean Water Act and comply with all Worker protections standards set by the EPA.
